William the Conqueror- 1066 AD

Q: William, what did you have to do to become king of England?

A: In 1066, King Edward the confessor died without an heir to the throne so the Nobles began to pick a new king. They choose Harold Godwinson, the brother- in- law of Edward. I also claimed the throne though, so in order to settle who became king we had a battle called the Battle of Hastings. I won the battle and I was crowned king on Christmas Day. Since the Nobles did not want me to become the king I had to earn their loyalty and trust from both the Noble and the Church by giving them fiefs. Throughout my rein as king I created the “Dooms day Book”. The book is a census of the kingdom,  all people, property, buildings, and livestock.
